Story

Lyrics

Give me one good reason why I should go on my own

Give me one good reason why you should stay here alone

Give me one good reason why I should turn

my back on all those years

Why would I sail away without you?

How could I sail away without you?

My rudder, my sail, my oars and my anchor

My lover, my friend, my ship would have sank without you

Give me one good reason to go.

One good reason is all that I’m asking for

One good reason and I won’t come round anymore

Lyrics

Every night I lay me down upon this bed of stones

Every stone has a story and a heartache of its own

There’s a stone for every time you lied

And a stone for every time I cried

And a great big stone for when you said good-bye,
on my bed of stones

Every night I lay me down upon this bed of stones

Every stone has a story and a heartache of its own

There’s a stone for every broken dream,
every promise that you made to me

And a whole lot of little stones in between,
on my bed of stones

I’m gonna take those stones

I’m gonna build four walls

Gonna build them strong

Gonna build them tall

Gonna top it all off with a big strong roof

Gonna make that house so heartache proof

That I’ll never have to lay me down again

upon no bed of stones

Oh but every night some woman lays herself down

upon a bed of stones

Lyrics

You walked into my heart like you owned the place

A lie in your eyes, a smile on your face

Now you say you’re sorry but you’re really not

I hope you go to Hell and rot

So don’t tell me to forgive and forget

Cause I’m not finished crying yet

No don’t tell me to forgive and forget

Cause I’m not finished crying yet

You lied, I cried

And I’m not finished crying yet

You pulled my strings like a puppeteer

Whispered sweet lies in my ear

Now you say you’re leaving and you say ‘don’t cry’

I hope you catch the plague and die

So don’t tell me to forgive and forget

Cause I’m not finished crying yet

No don’t tell me to forgive and forget

Cause I’m not finished crying yet

You lied, I cried

And I’m not finished crying yet

Well I hear you found somebody new

I hear she’s just as bad as you

I hope this time around you really give your heart

So she can tear it all apart

Well maybe you should forgive and forget

Or aren’t you finished crying yet

Maybe you should forgive and forget

Or aren’t you finished crying yet

She lied, you cried

And you’re not finished crying yet

She lied, you cried

And you’re not finished crying yet

She lied, you cried

And I’m not finished laughing yet

Story

I was inspired to write this by a poem my brother, George, wrote called "It's Snowing Again". I was remembering making angels in the snow, being hot from the exertion and from the heavy wool snowsuit, and looking up at the snow gently drifting down through the gathering dusk and feeling its cool kisses on my hot skin; like angel kisses.

Lyrics

When I was a child, making angels in the yard

I would close my eyes, and listen so hard

For the whisper of the wings and the song the angel sings

Floating down from heaven in the night

And feel those angel kisses on my face

I’d feel those angels lift me to a state of grace

When I was very young I used to fly with angels

Standing in the snow on a cold November night

Nowhere left to go so I close my eyes tight

And listen for the wings and the song the angels sing

Floating down from heaven in the night

I want to feel those angel kisses on my face

I want to feel those angels lift me to a state of grace

Wish that I could close my eyes and fly with angels

See the little child making angels in the snow

See her close her eyes she smiles ‘cause she knows

The whisper of the wings and the song the angel sings

Floating down from heaven in the night

She can feel those angel kisses on her face

She feels those angels lift her to a state of grace

She only has to close her eyes to fly with angels

Wish that I could close my eyes and fly with angels

When I was very young I used to fly with angels

Story

I have gotten some good natured ribbing from my songwriting friends about managing to fit the word "mastodon" in a song, but I like the way it works with the glacier theme!

Lyrics

There’s a chill in the room

I put another log on the fire

But I know that the flames are never gonna burn much higher.

There’s a chill in the room

No need to wonder where it starts

It’s a cold wind blowin’ over my frozen heart.

The ice - began to form - - years ago

Like a glacier creepin’ through the snow

The ice age came then rumbled on

Freezing my heart like a mastodon

Now I’m ancient hist’ry, me and my frozen heart

Story

This song was originally an instrument written by Ian Smith about Ghawdex (aw-DESH) which is the archaic name for Gozo, an island in Malta. Ian visited there and was inspired by the area's great beauty. He asked me to write lyrics for the piece and I did so by immersing myself in the many photographs Ian took while in Malta. I've never been there myself but it looks like an amazing place to visit!

Lyrics

Sail away,
I could sail away
ageless isles,
call to me

Endless waves
bathed in ancient light
close my eyes
and I can see it shine
impossible blue and
I’m going back one day with you
I left my footprint in the sand
it’s waiting for me and and
I’m goin’ back one day - Ghawdex

sail away,
I could sail away
ageless isles,
call to me
where the sun goes dazzling on the sea
it’s just a thought away
could go back there today
Just close my eyes and sail away

Story

I wrote this after meeting with an old friend that I hadn't seen or communicated with for over 25 years. Strangely we haven't communicated since either. Yet somehow the friendship still exists and remains ever fresh in my heart.

Lyrics

Hello, old friend. Never thought I’d ever see you again

You reached out from the past
to prove that friendship can last

Hello, old friend

Time goes by in the blink of an eye, lifetimes hurtle past

Tomorrows turn to yesterdays, slipping through my grasp

So many years. Slip off our hearts and disappear

After all that we’ve been through, how did I lose you?

For so many years

But in my dreams we’re still sixteen

Goodbye old friend. Will I ever see you again?

After all these years apart, we’re still joined at the heart

Goodbye old friend

Goodbye old friend

Goodbye old friend

Lyrics

Janie takes a walk down by the waterside

Watches the sun slide into the sea

The wind tears the note out of her tremblin’ hand

To dance it across the sand, where she’d like to be

And she’s damned if she does

She’s damned if she doesn’t

And she’s damned if she just walks away

Janie, what have you done?

What happened to the yearbook smile

And the carefree style of the girl most likely to succeed?

Janie, where have you gone

You don’t have to face the world alone

There are folks at home who can give you

What you need

Janie had a life, Janie had lots of plans

That somehow got out of hand, out of control

Easy to drift, easy to follow blind

Spending her last dime, the price of her soul

Janie walks alone down by the waterside

Feels like the ebb tide; sliding away

Story

This is the title track from my second CD. It began with the rhythm of the windshield wipers on a rainy-day drive.

Lyrics

I count the tar strips on the highway as they pass beneath my wheels.
I watch the wipers scrape the bug guts off the glass it's how I feel
When you just walk away
Can't face another day
Wish I could find a way to crawl into the past
And make it real, and breathe out, breathe in
Breathe out, breathe in.

The night is dark the pavement sucks up all the light
Low beam or high
A black hole waiting for an unsuspecting sigh
Shut up and drive it's still a long way home
And I'll still be alone
It's hard to see the road with mem'ries in your eyes
Just drive on and breathe out, breathe in
Breathe out, breathe in

One day I'm gonna shed this skin,
Start again, until then I'll just
Breathe out, breathe in, breathe out , breathe in.

I count the tar strips, I watch the wipers
The night is dark, a black hole waiting and I

Breathe out, breathe in, breathe out, breathe in
Breathe out, breathe in, breathe.

Lyrics

I hear your heartbeat in the rhythm of the
raindrops on my skin

The salt and sweet trace gentle patterns
down my lonely face again.

No one sees, no one knows, and my tears never show

If I was stronger I might never show the pain

That’s why I only think about you in the rain

My footsteps echo in the darkness
like you’re walking by my side

The rain drums on my skull like dirges
for a deathless love that died

No one sees, no one knows, and my tears never show

If I was stronger I might never show the pain

That’s why I only think about you in the

Rain, rain, go away, don’t come again till I can say goodbye

I  hear your heartbeat in the rhythm
of the raindrops on my skin

The salt and sweet trace gentle patterns
down my lonely face again.

No one sees, no one knows, and my tears never show

If I was stronger I might never show the pain

That’s why I only think about you in  the rain

Lyrics

I watched you crossing the floor

Saw you hold out your hands

But you brushed past and then you asked

Another girl to dance

Well it’s a strange world, strange world

Where you don’t care for me

Well it’s a strange world, strange world

Where you don’t care for me

You came and knocked on my door

Like my favourite dream

But when I answered

With thoughts of romance

You sold me a magazine

Poets say love is blind

And I believe that’s true

But I have learned where you’re concerned

It’s deaf and stupid too

And it’s a strange world, strange world

Where you don’t care for me

Yes it’s a strange world, but I’m a practical girl

And now I think it through, I never really cared for you
